Green Architecture 101: Building a Sustainable Future

Green building, sometimes referred to as sustainable design, is a practice that focuses on improving the efficient use of energy, water and materials during a building’s life. This practice also focuses on reducing the negative impact on human health and the environment. The traditional construction of homes and business adds up to nearly 40 percent of the United States’ overall energy use and 68 percent of the country’s total electricity consumption. A third of the country’s landfill waste comes from buildings in the US and 38 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions are a result of standard building practices. The infographic below illustrates how several architectural changes can positively influence the long-term effects of a building.
